Does it have the ability to absorb and make available nutriment and other elements like other planted aquarium substrates?

Thanks.

The more organic matter a substrate has, the more it can exchange nutrients (CEC).
The more clay a substrate, the higher the CEC.

Shale rock = 0 organic matter, 0 clay content, very very low CEC.

It would be an inert substrate, same idea as regular gravel, blasting / pool filter sand, Flourite / Eco-Complete etc.

Seems like a bad substrate to be marketed for a planted aquarium if its no better than normal gravel.
