Reducing return flow in IM Fusion

Hey everyone! I am a very new member here, but I have been lurking around the forum for a long while! Right now I am in the process of setting up an IM Fusion 10 as a planted tank. This tank was previously set up as a reef tank and the return pump has a rate of 120 GPH. I am planning on keeping a betta and a school of tetras of some sort. However I fear the flow will be too strong. Is there anyway of reducing flow? Ive seen some people but a sponge over the outtake. Would that harm the motor the pump long term?

The increased back pressure might reduce the life of the pump, but I'm not sure it would be by a noticeable amount. Another option for reducing the flow is to drill some small holes in the tube connecting the pump to the return in the tank. I did the same with my IM Nano 8 and it did help reduce the flow significantly.

My algae is the only plant that pearls.
