New to Planted tanks, Cycle issues.

Hi Everyone,

First time posting, long time reader.

So I've been cycling this 58L tank for about 3 weeks.

Has been setup with a brand new filter and tank, a used heater from a cycled tank and ada aquasoil.
I've done water changes every 2 days for the first week and maybe every 3-4 days after that. (50% changes, de-chlorinated tap water)

So far through testing (api test kit) I've watched the ammonia levels drop a little bit but not a whole lot.

Currently i'm reading about [2-3 ppm Ammonia] and [0 Nitrite].

Plants are growing and algae is also forming on the glass which is good i think.

The tank is eventually going to house caradina shrimp.

My question is: At what point will I finally get Nitrite to show up/finish this cycle, also is the water being still a little cloudy an issue? or just bb bloom?

Thanks a lot for your help. Feel free to ask me more questions I'm keen to learn.

i'm probably just being a tad impatient. (Attached is an image of the tank)

I'm not sure it's helping changing the water so much. Unless there's fish in it... Then yeah I get it.

But I think it took my new tank about 3-4 weeks. I dosed ammonia here and there throughout the process to keep feeding the bacteria trying to colonize. Pretty sure I didn't do a single water change during that time.

As for the cloudiness, I think it's pretty common for cycling tanks.

Optimal cycling conditions:

- pH 7-8
- Temp 85-95 F
- Oxygenate heavily (strong surface rippling)
- Ammonia at 4 ppm, until nitrites appear

Anything less and it will take longer.

@jaz + @Deanna

Mmk seems I'm on the right track.
Guess I'll slow down on the water changes and maybe consider dosing some Ammonia.
Im fairly sure i have enough oxygenation.

Thanks again!

A used heater from a cycled tank? Not sure of the value or meaning of moving a heater from cycled as little bacteria will be on the heater but if you do have a cycled tank handy, one way to almost immediately get the tank cycled is to move a portion of the media from the existing tank over to the filter on the new tank.
In doing that, you will move a portion of both first and second stage bacteria groups and they will be ready to eat if you are then adding some form of ammonia. Depending on what level of bacteria will be needed for the load added, it may need some ammonia added as otherwise, you will only grow a colony to meet the food /ammonia supply which may not be enough to support any large group of fish added.
