Time to remove the driftwood?

What is the general opinion on telling when your driftwood is past its prime and needs removed? The piece of hickory driftwood I have in my tank is definitely starting to decompose (the outer layer easily scrapes off with your fingernail). I'm pretty sure it's contributing to the algae issues I'm having throughout the tank.

My delay in removing it to this point is I like the height it provides while not taking up a lot of real estate in my 55gal and I don't have a suitable replacement. Hence some of the self inflicted frustration with algae.

Yeah when it falls apart. I had the same pieces sit ina tank for ~5 years and when I went to lift one it crumbled into tiny pieces. I just bought $65 of driftwood, hope my new tank looks good. Starting soon.
