Vacation dosing

I'm going on a 2 week holiday in a few days. I was interested to know what you guys do regarding dosing (EI) on longer vacations.

I could get a relative to do the 50% water change but I'd rather play it safe in case anything went wrong. I have someone who comes and feeds the fish/doses ferts. I don't think it would be necessary to do full dosing for the two weeks but I have no idea honestly.

Thanks

I do low tech and it seems to me that EI is a bit overkill and flushes good nutrients right down the drain weekly (somebody had to say it! <hehe>).
I think your plants will be fine, perhaps just not grow as much. Also, if you do a good water change the day before leave and plan on doing one when you come back, it will be good. Finally, Eheim makes a couple of good feeders that I've had great success with not only when traveling, but everyday in fry tanks!

In my 60g low tech, I just add a couple of capfuls of Flourish Comprehensive and a tsp of Equilibrium following the weekly water change....works for me:

Tank On, Mike-
60g Marineland Community, Finnex Planted+ 24/7, Silica (pool filter) sand.
10g, 29g, & 37g fry grow out tanks, 110g stock tank.

What came first, the chicken or the egg. It was the egg, but not the egg from a chicken.

Hi @oscarlloydjohn,

I went on vacation for 10 days this spring, 5 of my tanks are EI. I had someone come in every 3 days and feed the fish (pre-measured envelopes) but did no fertilizer dosing at all, just cut my photoperiods on the lights to a little over 50% of the regular photoperiod. My plants and fish did just fine.

Depends on the tank.

In my tank, I have loads of fast growing stems. When I went overseas for two weeks last summer, I cut down on dosing and light while I was gone. When I came back, many of the stems suffered and were weak.

In retrospect, I would have chopped everything back heavily reducing loads of mass, and just kept the same lights/ferts. If plants are used to high light/EI ferts, a quick reduction can produce negative reactions.

In a tank with fewer demands, you might get away with cutting back, but think keeping plants healthy. You can trim like mad when you return.

Reduce light intensity and duration to minimize algae, and plant growth. Plants will have little to no growth, no problem, they need a vacay too.

On two week vacations, I cut the EI dosing down to 50%. I figure at this dosing rate, at two weeks I have not exceeded my highest concentration levels that occur during a week of normal dosing.

Vacation dosing

Thanks for the input everyone. I think since it is just the two weeks, I'm gonna reduce the dosing to 50/60% and cut the photoperiod but not intensity. Hopefully that should work.
