Hob filter

So quick question, on a 20 gallon planted community tank, what would be the ideal gph flow rate? Looking at the marineland penguin filter and they have 75, 100, 150, 200, 350...

With an HOB filter I would suggest a turnover rate of 10x per hour , especially if your planning to keep fish.

One of the best HOB's for modifying ( doing away with cartridges, which impede flow quickly and are quite expensive in long term to replace ) are Aqua Clear filters.

I would suggest getting the Aqua Clear 50 model that is recommended for tanks from 20 to 50 gallons.
In reality, you will get a lower turnover rate than the 200 gallons that it states you will get ( they all do) because once you add all the stages of chemical, biological, and mechanical media the GPH potential diminishes. However, with this model you will still get an exceptional rate of flow, adequate to your needs.

Another brand that I have that I really like is Seachem's Tidal filters. The smallest has a flow rate of 250 GPH, but its flow rate is adjustable and and can be customized like the Aqua Clear.

Hi Redfish85,

Welcome to TPT!

+1 to @Discusluv recommendation.....Aquaclear. I suggest an Aquaclear 50 (the output is adjustable).

A Penguin 200 will give you 10x turn over. An hob gives you Front and back circulation. To get complete tank circulation, you need to set up a small power head to direct length wise circulation.

I like Penguin line of filters because they are quiet and self start reliably in power surge. Just don’t waste money on their cartridge. Buy polyester batting from craft shop and cut your own filter pad for dime each. Marineland sells filter basket that you can use to hold diy filter pads.
