So, I've had my tank established since late January. It's doing very well, but with everything I've learned from the forums and YouTube, etc, I'd like to re-scape with some significant changes.
I'd like to build some terraces for different planting levels and change the position of most plants in my tank so they're better organized and in more appropriate locations. I plan on pre building the terraces just for time efficiency.
The changes I have in mind would require me to take everything out.
I have 5 Cardinal tetras, 3 glow lite, 2 Siamese algae eaters and maybe 6 amano shrimp.
I was thinking I'd put everything into my water change trash can that would be filled with the aquarium water. I could even take my canister filter inflow and outflow and circulate the can that way. Then I could hopefully finish all the rescaping in like 2 hours?
I know for sure I'd have to add more soil. I'd be using UNS controsoil, which doesn't have ammonia as far as I can tell.
So here are some questions:
Does this plan sound reasonable?
If I remove some of the old soil and put in lots of new soil, will I mess up the tanks cycle? (I know lots of BB is in the substrate.)
Any pro tips or tricks from anyone who's done this successfully or unsuccessfully in the past?
Unfortunately just buying a second aquarium is out of the question lol.
Here's a pic if you're interested in what my tank looks like now
