Activated Carbon replacement?

I have been reading that activated carbon has been found to absorb some of the fertilizer nutrients that are added to a planted tank. If so what would be a good substitute?

Carbon still has its place though, so I like to keep it on hand at all times. If I have to medicate my tank, it's good to have carbon to soak up the meds at the end of the dosing regimen, along with large water changes. Carbon also is going to be the "go to" for potential chemical exposure.

I use Purigen on all my high tech tanks, great stuff.
