Pmdd

Bought some Plantex CSM+B from Gregg Watson the other day and just want to know successes and failures with it. Hope to find no failures just success. And how others mix it.

I will most likely start a journal in the photo section to show the improvements using this product. I have never used it before but used the Kent Marine Freshwater line of ferts. micro macro nutrients. Hope to get improved results. Not that the Kent stuff worked well it just got too expensive and hard to find on the shelves of the LFS.

See the Fertilator for ideas on how to mix the solution.

Dosing PMDD

I read that you should base the amount of PMDD to be dosed is based on the FE levels in your water column. The article I have read indicates a level of 0.1mg/l should be maintained. I also have in my hand the instructions for a Nutrafin FE tester which indicates two types of FE, free iron and chelated iron. It indicates that the free iron level should be at the max 0.1mg/l. And the chelated iron can should be 0.25-0.50 mg/l.

Now which level of "iron" should be maintained? I have maintained a level of 0.25mg/l with the Kent freshwater Iron products. Should I maintain this level with the PMDD mixture also or the lower 0.1mg/l which is recommended in the article I have read? Right now I do have it at 0.1mg/l with the PMDD mixture.

Hi,

I think for starters that as long as you are dosing some Iron and trace that the plants will do ok, but it you want then to really color up and thrive then you may want to fine tune your dosage of trace after getting everything else in order. I use Flourish so I can't speak of this product you are using, but what I can say is that your best indicator of Iron and trace dosages have to be your plants. The test kits can be misleading. I think all that they are really good for is telling you that Iron is present, but beyond that don't do too much. Just start conservatively and slowly say every 3-4 weeks increase dosages. Note your observations and stop increasing the dosage of trace when you start to get too much spot algae or don't see an improvemnt anymore and do weekly water changes to keep any one element from building up to toxic levels.

I can't really recommend any Fe test kits except maybe a LaMotte or Hach kit, but I've never used one. Iron is just so hard to measure accurately becasue it occurs at such low concentrations. I think as long as you stick to prescribed CSM+B dosing levels you should be OK. I just watch my plants and, if I notice any signs of yellowing, supplement the CSM+B with a little Flourish Iron. And I love CSM+B. It beats the heck out of Flourish pricewise

The computer allows you to make mistakes faster than any other invention, with the possible exception of handguns and tequila.
