Moving up to a 46 bow front, from a 10 gallon.

Any advice? I don't plan on getting a canister just yet, because money cut down from being in college. Not too worried bout cycling, intending on transferring some of my water to the 46 until its fish and plant ready.

What do you want to accomplish? What do you want to put in there?

Well I'm moving all my plants and fish over. I right now am using substrate on bottom, and sand on top. I'm doing substrate in my 46 gallon also, I just forgot the brand I'm using. I have x 26W spiral bulbs on my 10 gallon, so what lighting would work equal to that? I have some high lighting plants in my 10 gallon and I'm keeping those for my 46, so I need to figure out the best/appropriate lighting. I do the DIY CO2 kit and have a nano glass diffuser that lasts about 3 weeks.

My current plants are: DHG, java fern, flame moss, Rotala indica, some kind of bacopa my boyfriend gave me to rehab from his tank, and another red one i completely forgot the plant of.

I REALLY love dwarf baby tears, glosso, Blood Stargrass/Water hedge, Limnophila aromatica, Pogostemon stellatus/Eusteralis, and a few others i cant think of at the moment.

My 10 gal is matured and very well set up and all my plants are doing awesome, as well as my fish and shrimp.

What is the lighting I'd need for all those types? I like the aromatica a lot and was going to get it, but i didnt want to over stock.

Not sure about lighting, but if you're wondering about other gear as well, I'd suggest a minimum of an AC70 for HOB since you don't want to go with a canister. Also, if you're trying to speed up the cycling process, remember you can transfer filter media over, even if you don't have a filter in yet, and you could always mesh bag some of the 10g substrate and sit it in the bowfront. Either will decrease cycling time.

Hi klinds89,

I have a 45 gallon tall (36" X 12" X 24" high) and getting enough light down to that depth is a real challenge. I use an AH Supply 1X96 watt Bright Light kit and with their full size minimum restrike MIRO 4 reflector can get PAR = 105 at the substrate level which is 20 1/4" below the bulb positioned level with the top rim. That PAR reading of 105, which is considered "High Light" is with a new bulb and a clean AGA/Aqueon Versa-Top glass canopy in place. The same aquarium with a one year old bulb had a PAR reading of about 70 (Medium Light). The point being that if you want to maintain "High Light" plants in an aquarum that deep changing the bulb more frequently than once a year will probably be necessary.
