Fish jumping into HOB

Iíve got my Celestial Pearl Danios in a 10g QT. Three of them were super tiny. But, Iíve got a HOB on the tank, and have found 3 of them in the HOB; dead.

Iíve got a glass top on the tank, with the plastic extension on the back, and a small slit cut around where the HOB sits.

I also am running a sponge filter.

Ammonia: 0, Nitrites, 0, Nitrates, 7ish

Any other way to prevent this?

My first thought would have been going up the intake but some info on how and where they are found seems needed as being sucked in would often get them only as far as the impeller housing rather than in the HOB body.
I might guess some type of lightweight screen across the cutout might be needed if they are leaping up over the incoming water flow. Maybe a section of cloth or sponge so that they would have to start further back??
