Newbe question: emmersed tanks

I was looking at some emmersed tanks and I noticed that the water only covers the substrate. Is there a type of set-up/planting where theres more water, maybe 5 inches or so, but the plants still grow emmersed? Should I be looking more into ripariums instead? Does this make sense?

Ripariums, paludariums, vivariums. There are several options. But they're pretty much all the same principal.

If there is 5" of water then the bottom of the tank obviously won't grow ememrsed. But yuo can have land sections. Just build what you want and call it whatever you want. The terminology doesn't really matter.

vivariums - are like trpical setups, mostly land
paludariums - have a larger land and water sections
Ripariums - plants start with their roots on the surface and as they grow the roots enter the water more

If theres about 5 inshes of water will the plants not eventually grow above the water? will they only grow as aquatic plants?

Oh, I see. You're talking about growing them in the 5" of water and letting them grow taller.

Yes, they will grow above the water. I can't tell you which plants will thrive that was and which ones won't. But I've seen several setups like you're describing.

If you pick leafy plants that can be grown both submerged and ememrsed i think it can look pretty cool.
