Sad Night

Well earlier today i bought a 5 gallon tank. I decided i wanted it rimless, and i got 3 out of the 4 rims off when boom, a crack ran down the side of the tank. So im guessing that you guys can imagine how pissed i am right now. I had big dreams for this tank that are now, no pun intended "shattered".

Been there dont that.

It's possible to de-rim those. But it takes some skill. I've found that using a dremmel to cut the edges apart and then running a razor blade in between the glass and plastic to cut the silicone helps. But even at that they are really easy to snap.

I have done the same thing, but with a 10 gallon tank. The key is to take it very slowly and to make sure that the edges are free. On tank that I broke, I did so because I was being too impatient. The key is really to keep it slow and not to use too much force.

I have had success with using a dremel for cleaning up the edges, you just have to be careful not to marr the glass underneath.

nice thing about 5 gallon tanks... their cheep!. i would rather nix up a removal on a small tank, as a learning process, than on something more expensive.

Around where i live for some reason the brand walmart carries has $13 10 gallons but they dont have any 5 gallons. So at one of the Lfs (the cheapest) the 5 gallon was $18, which is still more expensive that it should be. Im deciding if i want to try this again or not.
