When to see results of CO2?

Hello friends,

Its been almost a week now since I introduced CO2 to my 95 gallon planted discus tank. At what point will I start to see changes in the plant growth and color? I was told about 30 days, but that was from a LFS in my area who was not a true plant expert.

Also, should I maintain any certain parameters in water quality? I am using 90/10 RO verses Tap. My TDS is stable around 75. I will check GH & KH tonight.

Thank You!

Thank you!

do you have a drop checker with 4dkh solution to make sure you are at 30 ppm of co2?

Now see, I did not know that I needed a drop checker, but I will indeed find one thats for sure. So I want at least 30 ppm of CO2? Is a drop checker the only way to test CO2?

well unless you want to spend close to 1000 dollars on an industrial test then this is your easiest option. There is the Kh and PH chart that can also give you an estimate of your co2 concentration in the water. However i think the best way is to get a drop checker.

( i guess i can't post an ebay link so search ebay fro drop checker ) here is the drop checker i got. It's cheep if you get it from asia but takes a long time to ship. You can get it sooner if you order it from ADA or locally but it's a lot more expensive.

Also the most important part is don't use tank water use 4dkh solution. You can make this but it's usually best to just order it. Search ebay for 4dkh solution and you can see what i mean.

A drop checker works based off the KH pH CO2 relationship. Chart: http://www.rexgrigg.com/Algae1.html
If you try and use this relationship with a tank water sample, it will be skewed by unaccounted for buffers. The drop checker is a known KH (generally 4 dKH) with no other buffers, so as the CO2 in the tank diffuses into the drop checker, the pH will change accordingly, as shown by the color of the test solution (turns green at around 30 ppm)

I justed tested the kh and I added 2 drops which means 2dkh. The ph is at 6.0 and the TDS as of now is at 98. I will look at the drop checkers tonight and order one with solution.

Thanks everyone for your great input.

With experience you can see how well your plants are growing but if you're starting out a drop checker is a must.

You'd want at most 30ppm of CO2... Too much will stress and kill fish.
How much light do you have by the way?

so according to the ph kh chart you have about 59 ppm of co2. This isn't the most accurate for reasons that FSM suggested in the post above.

for the record. I wish i was good at this and could tell the signs that my plants are getting enough co2 but i'm a total newb for now so i relay a lot on my drop checker for signs.

Shouldn't take 30 days... How much light do you have over your tank, and how deep is the tank?

I have 4 - 65 watt 10,000 bulbs and my tank is 24" deep. Drop checker ordered!

Here is a picture of my tank now. It is not landscaped very well as I was just seeing how things go with the eco-complete. I have had this running since June 2010.

It depends on what kind of plants you're growing. I could see unmistakeable changes in the plants in about 2 days or so.

Sry if you mentioned this already but how are you diffusing your co2 into this tank?

Don't forget to dose fertilizers appropriately. Plants need light and nutrients. I doubt that you have anywhere near high light with that light fixture. You may even be a bit short on light.
