Which tank, 40 or 55?

I currently have a 25 gallon tank and a 5 gallon hex, both planted. I am wanting a bigger tank to keep a couple of different dwarf cichlids. Which tank do you think would be better, a 40 breeder or a 55. There is currently a couple of 55 gallon complete setups with stands for $75-$100. There is a 40 gallon complete setup with stand for $125. All have just basic equipment, nothing great. I think I like the 40 breeder better, but it seems weird to have to pay more money for a smaller tank. Which do you like better, and which do you think would be better for a couple pairs of apistos?

I plan on making the tank a low light tank, with a DIY background, a stump-like piece of wood, black substrate, and plants that will grow low light. I do plan on upgrading whichever tank I get to a canister filter.

The last, more expensive, option is to go with a 75 gallon. There is one with that just shows tank and stand (no light or accesories) for $200 about an hour away, and one that includes the tank, stand and top with light for $175, but it is 1.5 hours away.

I'd take the 40B just because it offers more aquascaping capability.

I would prefer the 75 if given the choice of the 3 ( the 75 has the depth of the 40B with the added foot of length )

You are definately going to want a tank with a 36x18 footprint.... or if you want to bump up, go with the 48x18.... (75 gal) but you really can't aquascape a 55 gallon tank all that well. I mean, plenty of people do it, but it is just troublesome because you can't reallly get much depth in a 12" deep tank... (front to back)...

40B is a great sized tank. The 50B is nice too if you're looking for something higher, but then you have to fill that space at the top...

Avoid the 55 for all the reasons above.

55 is the devil. It seems so awesome.... ....but its not. I have an empty one in my basement I gave up on after about two months. Switched to a 40B....

For sure go with a 18" wide tank. I just got a 75G and it is so easy to work in.

You can go with the 55G but it is much harder to work with.

Here is the best I did with my 55G.

Length matters but its the width they really want!

I have to agree with everyone else. I have had both 55 and 40B and I had much more fun and flexibility aquascaping the 40B.

If that's the case, I'd recommend choice 4 for the 220 gallon tank! But yea, I was in the same dilemma last year. I either could have gotten a 55 or a 40B. I chose the 55 and regret it now. the 18" makes the big difference. And seeing that you're on a planted tank forum, I'm assuming you want to aquascape!
