Random plants from outside in aquarium?

I was wondering, has anybody ever taken a random/garden plant and successfully grown it in their tank? Every once in a while, I come across a weed or plant and think, wow that would really look nice in my tank lol I know it's appearance may drastically change if successfully grown submerged, but it's just a thought.

I think most, if they are not bog plants, won't convert to living under water. They will just rot. I saw one thread where somebody put creeping jenny from his lawn into his tank- and another where someone was considering a moss, to see if it would adapt. I don't know how successful they were. You can probably find those thread with a search...

You can do it with an avocado, I have tried it, you'll have to have a mechanism that keeps the seed at bay, though.

I have a 20 long newt tank that is 2/3 water and 1/3 open air with small terrestrial plants rooted into hollow logs for the newts to climb onto.

Terrestrial moss from outdoors died when it fell into the water. Potted plants (I forget the names) stems that stretched into the water eventually rotted and died off.

However, some of the potted plants did shoot roots into the water, and one is growing a baby plant completely underwater on one of its runners.

Mondo grass will survive for a few months, then rot and die. I had some- I bought it from the pet store not knowing it wasn't a true aquatic. It was attractive, but didn't last.
