Snails munching on Monte Carlo?

Has anyone ever had snails or fish munch on their Monte Carlo to the point it can’t survive? I have thick Monte Carlo carpets in a few tanks so pulled a few chunks off to establish in another tank, and it appears that the delicate new leaves (and eventually all of them) are a little appetizer for something in my tank. It’s fully planted with at least 20 species of plants so I won’t list them all here, but have never seen a plant attacked before. I see the Malaysian snails crawling over the Monte Carlo but I can’t see anything online to suggest malaysian snails eat healthy plants. As far as I can tell I only have Malaysians and ramshorn in the tank.

It’s a low tech tank so I doubt I can grow HC but any suggestions on less appealing (to snails) carpet plants are appreciated. I’ll try a few bits of lettuce to see if I can reduce the snail population but I’m not inclined to do anything rash to eliminate the snail population.

Thanks for the help!
