A few noobie questions

I have a 15 ltr tank which has been partially planted for about 6 months, planting got interrupted by diatom outbreak, now on the wane.

The light is generic so I`m experimenting with what will grow and I`ve recently added plugs of bacopa, ambulia and hygrophilla 53b. The only relevant test I have is a nitrate test so I`m dosing to 20ppm nitrate and trusting that the proprietary dry ferts are in proportion, I`m also dosing micro and 2.5% glut at the makers recommendations. Everything in the tank appears to be doing well.

At the moment and until I finish planting I`m testing for nitrate levels every day, so my question is :- Do I hold off dosing until the first dose level falls significantly.

Will the stem plants take nourishment from the water column or will I need to supplement with root tabs ?

If I were dealing with terrestrial plants and I wanted to encourage a good root system or a bushy aspect I would trim the stems to 2 or 3 sets of leaves, could I do this with aquatic plants ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
