Betta Biotopes

I want to create a 20 gallon biotope for my Betta Splendens.
Just looking for ideas, suggestions, advice, links, examples, etc...
Any input on the subject is much obliged.

In a 20 gal I think it would be cool to fill the tank about 1/3 of the way and have a lot of plants that grow up to about the top of the tank rim and hang out over the water.

LOL I just responded to your thread over on UB...

But yeah, I think an emersed/riparium setup like that one below would be ideal.

I'm doing a Betta Biotope with a 20G L right now. Here are links to the discussions about plants and such:

Can't wait to see what you do with yours!!!

In regards to your water conditions, definitely research Atison's Betta Spa conditioner, and if you want to take it a step further order indian almond leaves. Both the conditioner and leaves themselves will produce a slight to dramatic 'blackwater' tinge to the water (as well provide numerous actual benefits to your fish), depending on how much you use. If you end up breeding a pair the leaves are also home to all sorts of micro foods for fry.

But I'm not sure how much Tannic acid the Betta Splendens is exposed to in its native habitat.

I was also recommended/reading about Indian almond leaves, I am definitely going to order some. I don't plan on breeding, though. We might one day when we have the space/time for it but I stick to focusing on frogs for now.
I'm excited about this biotope!

I love what the IAL does for the water and it really seems to perk my boys up. I tried a couple of the bottled products before I broke down and ordered the leaves off Aquabid, and the results just weren't the same at all.

That seems to be the general consensus from what I have heard.
I hope to order some soon, do you mix them in the substrate, or what?
