Best time for lights?

So currently my mom turns the lights on around 7ish on her way out to work since I leave before 4 most days and I turn them off whenever I get home because shes not home till late most days, the problem is I never know exactly when I'm gonna get home so sometimes I'm back at 4pm other times I wont be back until 9pm, just depends on work. So I'm gonna get a timer and my question is, would it be better to have the light go on in the morning and off around 12-1 or have them go on around 12-1 and off at 10-11? I would like them to be on the second part of the day so I can at least enjoy them after a long crapy day of work (everyday) but if it would be better for the fish to have them on the first part of the day I'll make the sacrifice. Thoughts?

Mine go on at night. That's when I'm home to enjoy my tank.

Why don't you just set the timer to be on when you are actually home? I have mines set to turn on at 7pm I get home by 5:30-6pm and like to relax first before I look at the fish tank or do any maintenance (remove floating leaves etc...) and it turns off in the morning around 2-3am so I have a night light when I take a piss.

I work in construction so I literally never know when I'm gonna be home, I'm on call 24-7 so it comes down to the lights being on when it benefits the fish most. I do have a few live plants in the tank as well
