TDS help

Just came across this water parameter term and I have no idea what it means or how to test for it in my aquarium. Please advise?

There is a new species of shrimp i am looking to get and I see this mentioned all the time in reference to their keeping. So far my water looks perfect as is for them but I don't know about this.

TDS means Total dissolved solids. Its How much stuff is in your water. You can measure this by using a TDS meter. Where I am I have a TDS of 256 out of my tap. Using a RO filter I bring this down to 10 TDS. After the DI filter it brings it down to 0. The less your TDS is the cleaner the water.
