Few newbie questions about the very basics

About trimming:
I have few plants giving me a headache: Pogostemon stellatus, Bacopa caroliniana and Eichhornia diversifolia. I find them somewhat hard to trim (and plant). After trimming they will grow new stems from the cut section and soon become dense-messy-thing and the bottom leafs dies away. Am I doing something wrong? Ok, this is partly a lightning issue, but not entirely I think.

About planting:
How should I plant Heteranthera zosterifolia to avoid not getting just a "green-bushy-mess". This guy [YouTubevideo] has a really beautiful tank with great variety of plants. How is it possible to keep it in such condition? I mean how are they planted to get that superbly beautiful and dense feel of plants, but avoiding the problems described here in my post.

My tank is 450 liters with 300W of HQI light, 9 hours a day. Co2 (2bps) + weekly ferts after 40% of waterchange. Tank inhabitants are mosly discus and corydoras.

You have to supply lights, nutrients and CO2 to get that lush look.
You're probably lacking CO2 and nutrients. (2bps) doesn't say much and we're not sure what your ferts routine is. We usually measure CO2 with a drop checker.
