Should I Upgrade My Filter......

Sooo much knowledge here so I want to make use of it so I "minimize" my mistakes.
I have a brand new 48g bow front that came with a starter package that contained a Fluval C4 filter which is goo up to 70 gal.
I will be planting my tank with the thought of adding a CO2 system .
My question is.....would the Fluval 306 be a good choice for the up grade ?

My other question is about protecting the bottom of my tank.
I want to have rock so I was thinking about using ceiling light diffuser grid so the rock does not sit directly on the glass.
what are your thoughts ?

Personally I believe in using what you have. I doubt there's any filter so much better than your existing one as to justify its cost. Realistically it's unlikely you'll max out your biological filtration capacity, and if you need more flow powerheads are much more versatile and far less expensive. I would suggest adding an intake sponge of some sort; it's probably the best filtration upgrade you can make.

Lighting diffuser is a common choice for exactly that purpose and should be readily available at your local hardware store. You don't have to be very exact with the size or shape, especially since the stuff is a pain to cut.
