coconut shells

If you put half of an coconut shell in a tank as a hiding spot, how does it effect the water? None? Or does it change the ph? Or stain the water?

I don't have any experience w/coconut - except I'm a like mounds, But I use terracotta pot. I know they don't affect the tank. They can also be a base to grow moss on.

Terracotta is fine. There's always the chance you could get some made out of toxic clay, but I wouldn't worry about it much. Go for unglazed.

I'm pretty sure coconut shell is OK as well.

I like the coconut shell for a nice natural look. You can cut them in half, drill a little hole in them, tip them upside down and you have a nice hiding spot for dwarf cichlids.

Nope, it naturally sink by itself. Just invert it so that there's no trapped air.
