I used to think that fish accepting food was a learned behavior...

I have been keeping adult keyholes over the past year and have tried them with a variety of foods. They love all frozen foods, flake, peas, fruit, but they have always been "meh" about cichlid pellets.

I just tried my 3 mo keyhole fry on the NLS mini cichlid pellets that their parents rejected. The juveniles try them, then spit them out. They are voracious eaters, but they have the same tastes as their parents.

Maybe "cichlid pellets" are designed for Africans. Anyone with SA cichlids that LOVE pellets?

My angelfish will eat the NLS Cichlid pellets and the Growth pellets, as well as the Hikari Micro wafers that are supposed to be for the tetras, but I think that they would eat anything that fell into the tank if it fit in their mouths. The festivums, on the other hand, usually ignore the pellets and wait for the flakes. This is for breakfast; the pm feeding is usually some kind of worm or shrimp and then it's head smacking time as they all dive in at once for a mouthful. Ouch!

I don't often feed my cichlids pellets as they can vary so much. If the pellets are softer, they love them but when they are hard after drying for some time, they take them in an reject them. Since I can't always predict what I will get nor how long I may have it open before it is all used, I just don't go for the pellets anymore as there are so many other things which they do like at all times.
