CO2 from brewery supply

I make my own wine and the local brewery supply store will exchange out CO2 meant for beer for pretty cheap. Was wondering if there is a resource regarding this?

Like is it ok? Sure. It's just CO2. Might be a little purer since it's for human consumption. Maybe. Good chance it's just the same stuff you can get at a welding supply place. But yeah...if it's convenient and the price is ok with you...go for it.

I exchange my co2 tanks at a homebrew supply store in Portland. They exchange their empties at Airgas - so it all comes from the same place.

My tank journal.

I've not verified it but I have been told that the main difference is the way the refilled tanks are handled. Many of the welding gases are shipped on open trucks and that lets more junk get on and in the tank valve. Peps, Coke and beer trucks are normally enclosed and the gas may be considered more "clean". I read specs like 99.5 % pure versus 99%? Fish will not care so go for what works best to refill.

@PlantedRich is correct. The difference between industrial and food grade Co2 is .09% purity, obviously food grade being more pure.

For our use, it does not matter which one you use, industrial is probably cheaper!

I think a factor of concern is storage of the canisters as well.
Welding canisters swapped out all over the city have been a lot of weird places and hooked up to a variety of equipment with possible backflow contaminants... I mean I make it sound a bit dramatic but it's much different than a tank that has only ever been hooked up to a beer dispenser
