Black Friday

Just got around to checking out the BF ad scan for Petco and petsmart. I know BF has been on decline for about a decade now, but man...

Kinda expected tho as they’ve been running promos all year round that would really cut into any value a Black Friday sale could offer.

I’m really glad I got stuff as they had deals rather than hold out for BF.

I never get too excited about black Friday deals at the big box pet stores as what they call sales prices are often near what others sell it for all the time. So if I ignore their sale, I wind up buying less and that is always a good way to max the bank account!

I sure hope they have the 50 dollar spec deals though. I would love to get myself a desktop tank.

Hey guys!

Does anyone know if places like Bulk Reef Supply and/or marine Depot have decent Black Friday sales? I'm looking specifically for tanks like the Innovative Marine Nuvo series, and lights like those from Aqua Illumination. Any thoughts?

Thanks very much!

BRS and Marine Depot generally have some good sales. They tend to offer 15% off site wide excluding MAP items. With that said, a lot of the high end products are MAP bound. This includes IM, Ecotech, AI, Neptune, and others.

Edit: Some of the MAP companies will allow sales, but they are not all every year. When they do occur, often it is 10% off.

I just got an Eheim Pro 4 350 for like $100 off at Petsmart by ordering it online and picking it up at the store. Was surprised they even carry them to be honest. Wish I had known when I did a rush order for one a few weeks ago and paid extra shipping and bought it from the most expensive place online.

I never liked petco and petsmart when it comes to aquarium. They pretty much only carry HOB filters, no co2 systems, crappy fish, and they sell aquarium decor like castles and dinky beginner stuff. their substrates for sale are all pretty much inert.

Yeah, I was thinking with MAP pricing I wont see much if anything off the AI products. I was hoping the IM tanks might be one sale. I'll be watching!

Thank you very much!!

BRS currently has 15%+ off sitewide for non-map items. This includes 15% off IM.

I did just save $30 on a tank from Marine Depot so that's pretty decent IMO.

The stores you go to really tend to vary now. I don’t know what the deal with Pet~Co&Smart is but I have discovered that no two are really alike. Some are operating at what seems like different level of customer? After speaking with staff, it really boils down to a variety of variables and in some cases, if you get a person that’s really knowledgeable and they decided to make that person a fish/aquatic specialist, than that position and the level of service will only last as long as that “specialist” decides to work there if they are not able to refill the position. The pay is so low that it can be a challenge to get good staff and managers? I am lucky in that now, I have a decent local PetSmart and the PetCo is not so, good as the fish specialist “was an expert” but he left, and now they have a dog groomer running the fish section. Fish selection went way down, products etc. For a while I was seeing Scarlet Badis even at my local PetCo and high end canister filters etc.

honestly i cant tell the difference, nor can remeber, between petco/smart. It is very rare to have a fish employee with actual good knowledge; Ive seen some guy trying to sell a FW shark to a 7 year old girl, whose tank probably isnt that big. The main difference between LFSs and big-box pet stores is the fact that in the latter, their fish tanks and selection suck. true, they keep their tanks clean, but the fish themselves are in poor health, are suffering malnutrition, or plain dead. All the tanks are hooked up to each other so if one tank gets infected, all of them do. Their fish selection is abysmal too. Just your plain selection, common fish such as baby Oscars for $5 with no information about them whatsoever, mollies, GloFish (for more then a LFS), some tetras, and "assorted cichlids".

Agreed. Quality varies greatly between the big chain pet stores ime, even within the same store. I had a nearby Petco that I actually enjoyed going to because there was an employee there who kept fish and knew her stuff. The selection was typical/common fish for a Petco, but all the stock was healthy. A few months later after not seeing her there in awhile, I noticed that the tanks weren't as clean, there dead fish in a lot of the tanks, and some of the fish even had ich. I figured she left and they just replaced her with someone who had no idea what they are doing..

For BF, the only deal I've actually jumped on from a big chain store was Petsmart when they sold the FX6 for 50% off last year Don't think they're doing it again this year.
