Fluval Edge 16 Removing top and new setup Questions

Hi Everyone,

With my 54g Seapora tank running, I want to redo my 12G Fluval Edge to host a colony or shrimps and CPD. Modifications to be done:

1- Change filter for internal or sponge
2- Change Light (Which Finnex model or something else do you recommend)? Low and medium plants
3- remove the top.

Big questions is if someone already removed his top of the Fluval Edge 12g and if so, do I need to reinforce the side walls by putting more silicone or is it good like that? Tank was always full of water and still is and is 3yrs old.

Thanks all

I would be a little concerned about moving the top. (although I've considered it) There are loads of calculators on line for building tanks that will determine how large you can go based on the thickness of the glass. If you measure glass thickness and tank dimensions you can use a calculator to see if it's thick enough to be safe.

Adding silicone will do nothing except make the tank ugly. It won't stop the glass from flexing and new silicone will not adhere to cured silicone. If you remove the top you'll probably need to do euro bracing or install a center brace. You could always cut the top and make braces out of it. It's a low iron glass tank so if you used regular glass for the brace the green edge would probably be rather apparent.
