root problems?

has anyone ever had the roots of their plants grow up and out of the substrate? I'm not the most experienced with live plants and have never seen it before.does it mean anything in particular, like that i'm doing something wrong? any help would be nice.

Yes, I've had that happen with some plants, early on in my tank days. I think it is because they are seeking nutrients- do you use ferts? maybe you need to dose more, or with greater frequency.
