How do you top off?

I have a 20g counter tank. Before I re-did my tank, I bought purified water in large amounts at a grocery store, and kept them on the counter next to my tank.

When it was time to top off, I tried to pour the water in from the large container, and it splashed all around. Not good. So, I bought a smaller container, poured it from the large container to the small container and that always splashed as the hole was smaller to pour into.

Needless to say, I'm looking for a new way to top off, now that my tank is almost ready again.

How do you do it? What types of containers do you use?

20G long / Finnex Planted + / Marineland C-160 / Tunze Regulator / Fluval Bubble Counter / Cobalt Neo-Therm Heater / Koralia 240 / Rhinox Drop Checker

I have a plastic cup I use just for tank stuff. I hold the lip of the cup just under the water surface and pour from a gallon container into that, to break the flow. Or if your hands are clean, pour over your hand held just in the water.
csimon1 and csimon1 like this.

I use a pitcher and plastic ladle on my smaller tanks. Stick the ladle an inch under the surface and pour into it breaking up the flow. I have a 2? gallon that's only about 7 inches tall and it doesn't stir that up even when I fill quickly. Cup or hand will do the same thing but over the years I've gravitated to the "fish only" ladle because its shaped right, it's shallow, and my hands are usually dirty

I prefer the large spoon design over the deeper-bowl ladles. Sends water outward more than back upward, reducing splashing. Just make sure its an inch or so under the surface!

92% of all statistics are made up on the spot.

I have a 2 gallon bucket, and simply siphon with airline tubing and a small valve into the tank.... That way I can vary the flow from a drip to a stream.....

I just pour a small bucket on my cupped hand positioned right along the waterline.

I use one of those 5-gallon "camping jugs" - the white ones with the spigot. It lets me dechlorinate a decent amount of water and I can control the flow easily. Image: http://www.peppereyes.com/files/2467...Water_fww5.jpg

I hold a sponge at the water surface and pour the water on top of it.
