experimental Sump round 2

Hey guys so I never got to finish my experimental sump last time due to having well issues and having to shut down my tanks. now that it is all fixed I am starting my tanks back up. so with that said.

I have an Idea I like to do based on pool sand filters. essentially I want to use sand and gravel as a detritus removal. I want to see if this will eliminate the need for floss and still be able to pollish the water. and Act as Biological at the same time. I notice in all my tanks that detritus collects in the bottom of the sumps anyway. so why not use gravel and sand to collect it. then I can just gravel vac it out every other water change or when ever it needs it. I think it will be trial and error.

But here is how I plan on useing it. stage 1 first baffle it flows though Big course gravel stage 2 it flows through safe T sorb, stage 3 it flows through 20/40 grit blasting sand. I was going to use pool sand under that but cleaning it would cause it to mix and defeat the purpose. I could use a 4th baffle where my heater is going to do a finer grain sand but I don't know if that is needed. I also may plant the sand and safe T sorb with heavy root feeders to help eat and break down the detritus. your thoughts on that. I am thinking 8" deep of the big gravel, about 4" of the safe T sorb and 2" of sand

now because the water will be flowing through the sand and gravel It shouldn't have any anaerobic pockets, but what concerns me is water flow. If I don't keep up on detritus removal it could back up the system. but at the same time will the sand be to fine for the amount of flow. I will be using egg crate and window screen to keep the sand and gravel suspended from the bottom of the tank

So give me your feed back the pro's and cons that you might see with this. and anything else that might need to be tweeked, so thanks for you help.
