Can I put pods from a crepe myrtle in my tank safely?

I see people using alder cones, and different leaves and seed pods and such, and the crepe myrtles out front of my house have these very interestingly shaped seed pods that are very dry. They look pretty cool, can I put them in my tank for a similar effect to the cones and leaves? Are they safe? Here is a random google picture of what they look like

I've put crape myrtle bark in my tanks without any issue. I assume the pods would be okay, but don't know for sure.

The people over at tannin aquatics said they have used them safely and just to boil them first. I decided to message them on facebook since they seem to be the leading seller of seed pods, bark, and botanicals.
