drift wood treatment

I have a relatively large piece of driftwood that has been in my tank for 4 years or so. I noticed particularly during the last few months that it has black algae spore like things all over it, and is pretty much completely covered in various type of algae. This got especially worse after I took some advice from my LFS and began dosing with Excel & Iron more aggressively. Basically micro dosing the tank daily. I am wondering if I should just take the wood out and boil it to kill all the algae/spores whatever that is growing all over it?

The tank does receive some direct sunlight (through white blinds which dull it a little) as for now there's nothing I can do about this - I have blamed my excessive algae issues on this primarily, but it appears I have done something to aggravate things in the tank lately. There has also been a green algae bloom in the tank, wondering if this is also due to the excel/iron regiment I've been doing. Is that just the tank going through an adjustment period or should I immediately stop my nutrient regiment? Sorry for multiple questions but they are related, any advice is much appreciated.
