Question Newt filter???

So i have two newts in a 10 gallon tan. Ive had them for at least 5 or 6 years and wen i first bought them i also got this internal filter (don't remember the rating on the pump). I was wondering since the pump has been used for them, is it ok if u use it as a secondary filter in my planted tank when im cleaning and mixing everything up. Ive heard that the newts i have (Oregon newt and fire-belly newt) excrete toxins in their skin, so would this effect my fish and plants, more so the fish. I doubt anyone will know since this isnt a newt forum but i thought i'd just throw it out there and see.
Thanks everyone
