New 55gal planted tank

I am starting a 55 gallon planted tank. I am wanting to stay low tech, low to medium light. Right now I have a 4ft. 32w T8 shop fixture I bought from Home Depot, with 2 40w 18,000K light bulbs from Petco. Is this enough light? I am new to the planted tank world...

I'm a little confused about what you're saying-

Are you saying that you have 2x 40 watt T8 bulbs in a 48" fixture right now?

Welcome to TPT, BTW!

Yes, I have two 40 watt T8 bulbs... I was a little confused myself, I thought 48" T8 bulbs were 32 watts. I was wondering if I should try and find a 40 watt ballast to power it, or maybe even put them in a T12 fixture? Thanks!! I am excited about my project and would appreciate any help and advice I can get!!

Could you post a picture of your fixture?

If I'm visualizing it correctly, it does sound like a good fixture for a low tech setup.

Before you go out and buy anything to upgrade it, also price out the Coralife T5NO from Big Als- IMO this is the perfect fixture for a low tech 55gal tank: http://www.bigalsonline.com/BigAlsUS...lestriplight48

I tried to copy the links to the equipment I have but I received a message saying that I must have made at least 5 posts before I can copy a link, the forum is trying to cut down on spam. The fixture is a Lithonia T8 with diamond plate, mirror finish and electronic ballast. The bulbs are T8's: one 18,000 k Aqua-glow and one 18,000k Power-Glow.
That is a really good deal on a T5 fixture... $100 is the cheapest I have seen so far.
