Fish Euthanasia...

I just read somewhere that a humane way to put a fish down that is suffering and terminal is to add clove oil to the water. The clove oil acts as an anesthetic.. but when overdosed, will cause death.

Anyone know if there is any truth to this?

It would be nice to know that if I am in a situation that requires it, there is an alternative that is humane and not painful. I think it would be good for everyone to know if this is indeed true.

...so put them in a cup and then put them in a fridge in the dark works?

I hate to end a life of a fish even if he is still alive, but I had to do it to some cause they had some nasty desease and I didnt want it to spread or the other fish to eat it and get infected

I have a bottle of clove oil for this purpose. I haven't needed it yet, so I can't comment on how effective or humane it is.

You can often pick up clove oil at new-age-ey sorts of health food stores.

I've used clove oil and my fish thrashed around like mad - I felt awful. I put them in a cup of water and then into the freezer now.

Just wondering why I have no problem pulling a fish out the lake on a fishing line but removing one from the tank kinda bothers me.

pretty sure that is just clove oil.

Freezing is not humane imho. Cold injuries are very painful in mamals, I don't imagine fish enjoy it, despite being cold blooded. They still have pain and nerve receptors and the process cools them very fast, not slow in a way they would just start to slow down. It would be like plunging you into a frozen lake...

I had to do it once and used a butcher knife to quickly decapitate her.
