Post Really informative article on using leaves in the aquarium.

Been reading Practical fishkeeping this morning. There were two interesting articles one being about leaves.
Although it is Titled as Free Decor, it really runs much deeper, even showing data from studies in the response of tap vs RO water to different leaves.

It also lists safe leaves to collect for decoration and food, even for shrimp.

Enjoy

Thanks for posting this. I think most of this is known in the community, but it was good to see some hard studies of the leaves and their individual effects on water color and quality.

I have experimented with leaves throughout the years, by finally committed fully to a blackwater tank a few months ago.

Thanks for the article. I have used catappa leaves in my betta tanks for a long time and fish really seem to enjoy them. The only thing? Catappa has never really colored the water. I put two large hand-sized leaves into a 6.6 gallon tank and the color change was so subtle (even after days of use) you didn't notice it unless you really looked. I wonder why?

It makes a difference if the leaves laid out in the rain....]
I actually look for leaves that are starting to bleach to reduce the tannins, but keep the hiding spots for baby fish and the natural look.

Heck I even throw leaves in my outdoor cory ponds.
