API Nitrate Test Readings

Does anyone have any tips for telling the difference between 40 and 80 ppm on the API Freshwater Nitrate test card? They both look the same color of bright red to me!

I doubt you'll ever need to read 40-80ppm in a tank with growing plants.

i had well water that was over 40ppm. i could never tell.

honestly, the only thing i can suggest is that you ask the nearest woman. women tend to be able to see shades of color better. if she doesnt know, all you need to know is that if it's 40ppm or more you should try to do something about it

not true. for some reason my 55 planted (over a year old) has always had readings in the 40-80ppm range. lots of plants but it still high...fish arent bothered by it so I dont worry too much.

Unless you first calibrate your nitrate test kit, the readings mean little or nothing. See the fertilizing forum for more about calibrating test kits.
