Questions concerning my tank

I'm sure you guys get this a lot,. but I am having some issues with my planted tank.

First off,

55 gallons
130 watts of compact flourescent
weekly water changes of 40%
Java ferns anubias and wisteria
flourite gravel
lights are on for 9 hours a day on a timer

I am getting a ton of algae on the glass and plants. The java ferns have holes in them and are not doing well. In fact, none of the plants in my tank are doing well which is weird because they did so well for a long time(almost a year). I recently just cut down on feeding from once a day to once every other day. I was dosing flourish excel, but I am changing to flourish I think. Was doing that once a week. I just can't figure out what the problems are. Can anyone help?

I'm guessing you aren't running any CO2?

Less time for lights, or start using co2.

Ok, I cut the lights down to 8 hours a day. There's got to be more I can do right?

If things were going well with Excel, start it up again! Flourish is a fertilizer and Excel is a carbon source, you need both to have happy growing, algae free plants.

Definitely go for the happy healthy plants and the algae problem will diminish greatly. You may need to reduce the light time by another hour or two but your plants would rather have more light and more nutrients. I would go C02 here but everyone feel differently. Kathyy is probably right though, get to using that Excel again and hopefully it'll all work itself out.

thanks everyone. When using the excel, do you mean I should go back to dosing it daily or once weekly?

Follow directions on the bottle but you should probably use it everyday to every other day until you algae dies off. You can also do spot treatment with Excel. Also look in to DIY CO2 it works for my 10g.
