Green water newbie: advice needed

I have green water in my 72 gallon tank. It's a bare bottom tank with just a pot of plants and some discus.

What's the best course of action to get rid of it?

Thanks,

Yasmin

PS - I'm hoping not to spend a lot of money to fix this.

Well, the best way I have found is a UV sterilizer. You can get a cheap in-tank one off ebay for around $40.

Cheapest, total blackout, no lights, and wrap in a blanket for 2-3 days. Most effective--UV Sterilizer.

The Green water is caused by too much light and/or too much nutrients in the tank.

Easiest- do nothing, wait it out.

May take 4-8 weeks, though.

I would just do a three or four day blackout. Make sure that you cover your tank completely so that no light can get in. Do not feed your fish during this time (as you will be letting in light). You can leave everything else as is.

A culture of Daphnia! They will clear the green water and the discus can eat them as a treat.
