Best thing I've done in a while...

Tossed out nearly half of my plants...

One side is still dense and to the water line.

The other half only has 2 or 3 really small bunches left (indica, hygro, and a bacopa)

The fish seem to like the extra room and the tank looks 3 dimensional.
The fish are floating in air.

I can find the pygmy cories again.

I am due for an overhaul myself pedietz...
But as much as I look forward to the change I am dreading the task itself. I need to pull up a mass of mature c. balansae's (25-30 plants) with roots that go forever under the substrate that are also mixed in with some giant Anubia roots.
Then there is the Java Fern mess I have on 2 large pieces of wood side by side...those have become one piece and I will most likely need to cut them apart with a chainsaw...not to mention how bulky and heavy this thing is now , water will go everywhere !

In a way I hate to do it but at the same time it HAS to be done. I told the wife she better call a friend and make some plans for that day because this could get ugly ...
I hope to get it done in the next few weeks, oh yeh , I think I said this to myself a few weeks ago... LMAO !

Can ya tell I am not looking forward to this...

How about a photo of the new look ya got goin ?

I think you grow the healthiest Java fern in the world Buck!

The "Big Prune" is a royal cramp, but the "Big Wait" for things to grow back and look decent again is almost as bad!

Isn't it wonderful what a bit of open space will do Pedeitz? That open foreground makes things look bigger and more organized.

Mike

I just did the big prune in my 29g, plus I've decided to take down my 6g, so I've got a bucket full of plants I haven't decided what to do with yet. My 29g is so empty right now. I can't get used to it!

it must be that time of year...i'm about ready to overhaul my 75 gallon. ditch all the ambulia I've been growing for a year, maybe ditch 1 piece of driftwood, and really re-do my plant stocking by about 80%.
I'm bad at picking plants though...might just get a $60 package from aquariumplants.com (though I wish their biotope packages were ready)

LOL Buck. That is indeed some of the healthiest java fern that I've seen.

Good thing that I have a small tank that doesn't have too much in it. Things tend to grow pretty quick in there and I have to prune it constantly (once weekly). I have to do it again this weekend, since the L. aromaticoides and L. repens has reached the surface again, and both the Tonina and L. matogrosense are getting scraggly on the bottom.

Well I tried to give this thing away to someone here a month or two back but I cant quite remember who. My father had this bowl sitting in his garage for years and realized that I might be interested in taking it to make another tank out of.
The "pyrex" label can be easily read on the back by the filter output. The only thing I dont like about it is the way it distorts the view but it is after all round glass.
My wife actually loves it... thats the other bad thing because now I dont think it will leave... it makes a nice "nightlight" in the computer room.

Well not that I have ever said this before but the ferns love "NITRATES"

hmm thats some pretty impressive Java you have there. Mine has been growing upside down in a ball at the surface. Yours is really nice, the closest I ever got to growing good java was when it was planted in the substrate in a pot. Sure it grows faster now floating on the wood, but its not the same.
