I've never been myself but I've heard AquaMain (or something along those lines) is pretty good.

Aquamain's is very nice with loads of stock and fish, plants and critters. They have several display tanks too. Harland is one of the managers and he is very nice to work with.

I'll have to check it out, thanks Left C. Do you know of any other decent stores that aren't too distant?

I'm sorry that I didn't get back to you sooner. I rarely go here.

I suppose that you go to Fintastic in Charlotte.

http://triangletropicalfish.com/ in Durham is another good place. You can see what they have coming in with their links. They're good people.

There's a good aquarium store on South Blvd in Charlotte. It's Frank & Peg's.

Here's a list: http://www.carolinafishtalk.com/forum/lfs.php

I actually work at Fintastic, our plant selection right now is not the best. I'll have to check out the place in Durham next time I am out that way. Thanks!

I'm sorry to hear that about the plant selection at Finstastic.

Finstastic was very good when they were on South Blvd and Phil Edwards worked there.

This is funny and sad in a way. Phil had the tanks with the plants that were for sale pearling. It was neat. The planted display tanks were gorgeous. When Phil left to go back to college; the people would "undo and change" what Phil had done and everything looked like crap. The people that worked there only knew how to do a fish only tank.

I haven't been to Finstastic's new location. I've been in Burlington for several years now. Most of the time those two places that I mentioned have a good selection of plants.

If you decide to stop in either of those places; you can call ahead and ask them about their plant selection.

aquamains

I'm headed there this weekend...when I spoke to a guy on the phone, he said his plant selection is pretty depleted right now...should have some in Thursday (tomorrow). I'll post again w/ some imput. Also, if you can catch them when they're first delivered, the PetCo in Greensboro has a pretty good selection (I don't think anyone there knows how to properly care for plants, 'cause they melt/get covered in algae pretty quick). Good prices for potted plants, though.

I and another employee (the only two who have planted tanks unfortunately) Have been working on getting the proper equipment for those plant tanks. I am hoping by the end of the summer.

Thanks again

Did you get to go?

What plants did you come home with and what plants did you see?

I went to Aquamain's in Greensboro this afternoon (2-3-09) and I got a huge shock. Instead of a 1/2 acre of aquarium equipment and supplies, there was dog food and pet carry cases with a very tiny spot that had the aquarium equipment. It looked like a poor man's Petco or something like that.

They still had most of the holding tanks for the fish, critters and plants for sale, but there was very little fish and critter stock. Their plant selection was surprisingly good though.

Aquamain's used to be a great place. It's sad that .........

I heard they were under new ownership (in the news letter.) That is sad about the pet supplies taking over. A few years ago, there was a guy named Jamie who kept two pretty nice planted tanks. Now the tanks are terrible, and the main planted display they have has the worst case of BBA I've ever seen(along with half of their other F/W displays). On the bowfront planted display, they're diffusing pressurized Co2 at like 3bps with a Hagen bubble ladder, so the bubbles are moving so fast that nothing gets diffused. They have a TON of light on the tank all day too. I would think getting the display tank right, would help their plant/ plant supply sales tremendously.

They really need to gut their planted tanks and start over if they want to continue with plants. Swap out the bulbs, throw in some clean substrate, and at least get it to where they could maintain the plants they do get in stock. They probably lose 30% of their stock because it just rots away.

I think they have a girl named Jen ordering plants now, so maybe she'll step it up and get them in the right direction, if the new ownership allows. She seems really nice.

Let's all make a trip over there and volunteer to clean up the plant section.... lol

I really wish they would step it up. The internet is fun, but there is nothing like browsing around a real aquarium shop that makes you want to buy 1 of everything.

I was at Aquamains two weeks ago (4/3/09). I hate going into the store where you first find stuff like you see in Pet Smart or another pet store like those instead of their very nice aquatic displays.

On the good side they had a nice selection of plants, but the freshwater fish stock was very low. They did have some very nice Amano Shrimp that I purchased all they had.

Thanks for the update Left C. I think the way they moved that huge pond looks a lot better too.

Maybe one day we'll have at least one type of store like the guys out in San Fran and the rest of the California coast enjoy.

I wonder why Chapel Hill doesn't have a nice fish store.
