I wasn't able to locate any store selling either turface or soilmaster select, but found something close, Oildri. It is charcoal in color and is made by the same company that makes soilmaster. It cost around 3.50 for ten pounds at Ace Hardware stores. The grain size is similar to regular Flourite, and smaller than Flourite Dark. More information can be found here

Now I just need to buy a new tank!

Yes.

It is going ok. I am using the dry start method with a soil based substrate and an eco-complete and oildry cap. Most of the top layer is eco-complete since I prefer the black color over the tan of the oildry. I still have a few weeks to go before I fill the tank with water. I may start a journal thread for it.

Attached is a picture of my tank with the oildry as a cap.

did you do MTS, or just plain soil?? In your picture, that's eco? It looks kinda greyish, i guess that's the color of the light reflecting off the black eco?

The picture is an old one with oildry as the cap. It could be the light, but the gray color is mostly due to the color of the oildry which is brownish or tan. This is the cap when it is dry. It looks different when wet.

The current tank has a black cap from the eco-complete, but I don't have a decent picture of the current state of the tank. The glass walls are covered with water droplets from the high humidity making it hards to take a clear picture.

It is just plain topsoil, but since I using the dry start method lasting 8+ weeks, the soil will be mineralized once I actually fill the tank with water. I will either fill the tank in two weeks of wait until the end of February to do it.

This is instersting.. I'm having issues finding SMS or Turface around here (too lazy to go out to long island). I did find that this stuff is sold in Sams club for about $6 for a 40LB bag. I wonder if it's the same thing? http://www.samsclub.com/shopping/nav...=5&item=256758
