What is the best LFS in NYC?

Getting back into the hobby after almost a decade.
We live in NYC.

Googling is tough. There are custom shops and salt water shops.... But so few reviews... and the websites I do find are not informative.

I’d love to have an LFC store that’s not a Petsmart 🙂

Can anyone recommend a store in the city?

Thank you!

There's a couple depending on which part of NYC you're living in. Pacific Aquarium in lower Manhattan next to the Williamsburg Bridge, Amazing Aquarium in Bensonhurst, Monster Aquarium in Flushing, and Fishworld USA in Whitestone.

Infinity Aquariums in Sunset Park has a nice selection of rarities. It's owned by the same person who ran Archer Fish Aquariums in Bay Ridge a few years back.

what he said although towards later in my hobby interest, i would pretty much only go to Monster Aquarium in flushing.
It's a quick short train ride and they pretty much have everything

I can recommend Pacific Aquarium. Nice people, good service, though I've not been there since the lockdown.

The rent in Manhattan is so high that there are no LFSs left except near China town area. Brooklyn and Queen have more choices.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions! So helpful!!!

We will make a trip downtown or can go to Brooklyn or Queens. I wanted to go check out some stores as we cycle our tank to see which we like best.

We are just starting out, so not looking for any fancy fish, just the basics. But having a knowledgeable LFS I think is really important.

Word of mouth from experienced fish keepers is really what I was looking for 🙂

It really sucks that there is not one closer but that’s alright 🙂

Thank you again!

Monster is hands down the best for selection & price, but another decent shop in NYC is Manhattan Aquariums on W 37th St.

I wanted to follow up on this thread.

We visited MANY stores so far in Manhattan and BK
Except for the Monster in Queens, which I know is a major contender.

Pacific A&P is BEAUTIFUL!
Their fish look so healthy, their tanks are clean. For NYC, I think their prices are fair.
There is also metered parking right in front if you drive 🙂

I really liked the store. But I found staff to be a bit stand-offish when we asked them questions.
The guy who caugh our fish was brand new, as he said but he was SO rough with them and clearly didn’t know how to catch them properly.

We purchased 6 cardinal tetras from there.
1 perished the first day the rest are doing great.

We also went to Petqua
Not much to look at but if you look closely all the tanks ave very clean. There some is algae in them though which is not a problem. We have been there several times, I’ve not seen a single fish dead in a tank or with ich on it.

We bought 8 neon tetras here - 3 of them passed one by one daily. But they were the VERY first wish we got and there is a chance I did not acclimate them properly. (I only floated them)

The 5 remaining are doing well.

We also purchased 4 cardinal tetras this past Sunday (8/1) and today (8/4) everyone is still with us.

We also got 6 Otocinclus on 8/1 - also all fish are still here and seem to be doing well. 2 have tail fin damage but that seems to be a transport thing.

What I LOVED about Petqua was that the guy wouldn’t sell me more than 8 neon tetras when he learned that I had a fresh cycled tank. I PURPOSELY ASKED him for more and he was like “no. You might have an ammonia spike an kill them”

The fish there are more expensive and when you get in the fish room it seems kind of messy and hot. But I think they are a solid LFS.

We also went to amazing aquariums in BK.
I bought 6 Corydoras there. All 6 fish are happy and doing well, 3 weeks later. We called a bunch of stores and these guys were the only ones with the Cories we wanted and once we saw them they were impossible to resist.

But I will never go back to that store.
It was smelly, their neons were COVERED in ich. Dead fish floating in almost every tank.

I took the chance on the cories bc they were one of first fish in my tank (hr them the day after the first batch of tetras 3 weeks ago) and I just dosed the whole thing with medicine.

We went to at least 4 other stores in BK and the one in Manhattan on the West side. I couldn’t run out of there FAST ENOUGH.

Monster in queens is still on my list to visit but I am running out of stocking needs 🙂

Monster posts new stock additions on their Facebook page, so you can check out what they have without having to make a trip out to Flushing.

Check out Aquastar on Henry st in Chinatown. Be warned, it's VERY cramped, so no social distancing is gonna be possible.

Thanks for sharing! I do have to say that your experience with Amazing is not the norm. Whenever I have gone, their tanks have been pristine and I have always had good luck with my purchases. That being said, I am a big fan of Monster for and the selection can't be beat. Nowadays, I go to Amazing for hardscape materials or plants.

I know it's not NYC but if your ever up for a trip to Long Island, AquaHut in Coram has an amazing variety of freshwater fish. Not the prettiest store, but for variety and prices it can't be beat.

Country Critters in Patchogue (only 15 min from AquaHut) despite the name has a huge fish department.
