Anyone have substrate sold by lbs?

Looking to fill a 3G tank with subsrate, dont want to buy a whole bag as I will use a small amount only

Does anyone have or know a store that sells by the pound/liter?

What kind of substrate are you looking for? I feel like most aquarium stores offer some pretty small bags of gravel/sand.

Not an inert subsrate, I might do a dirted tank and steal some sand from Coney Island beach...

It seems you've done dirted tanks, any tips?

Good idea
You'll find that you're able to grow a much wider variety of plants with dirt than with enriched substrates alone.

I have some tips on starting up a dirted tank in this thread.

For a 5 gallon, perhaps stick to .5" dirt layer and 1" sand. If you collect sand from the beach, make sure you wash out finer particles. Takes awhile - really worth it to spring for pool filter sand. How often are you in Manhattan? I'd be happy to give you some.
Econde and Econde like this.
