Unhappy LFS closing down

Coolen's Aquarium & Pet Supply, in Canton MA, is going out of business. I've been buying stuff from them for years, but it looks like that wasn't enough. They still have some good stock and it needs to go. No plants (unless you want Java ferns/moss) but a decent selection of pre-sunk driftwood, rocks, tanks, and fish. A few standouts include a lone Madagascar Rainbowfish, electric blue acara, and a pair of unidentified shell dwellers.

Go visit them!

Not in my neck of the woods, but it's always a sad day to see any LFS go. Even the ones that aren't well-run. They are disappearing faster and faster.

If my ex didnt live up that way I would definitely take a trip up there for stuff... even if I dont have the space for it.

Just started working with planted tanks
8g tank starring Merlin the betta (planted)
15g tall tank containing tetras and corys (planted)

I hate to see/hear about locals going out. I do NOT like going to Petsmart or Petco. Lately I am driving 45 minutes south of me, because they have great fish and shrimp. Only one other local in my area, and he always has the same things as the big box retailers. Boring......

My Toys; 100 gal. Clown Loach tank, 40 breeder community tank, 7.5 gal Emerald Rasboras, & Dwarf Cories, 17 Gal. Aquascaped Rimless Cube, Pygmy Cories, Embers, Dwarf Cories, Amano Shrimp, 3 plant/shrimp tanks, 300 gallon formal water lily pond, 150 gal. pond.

My situation is even worse. Two LFS about an hour away. One is 100% saltwater, the other is 90% saltwater. Beyond those it's a 2 hour drive to a few quality LFS. There used to be a few small places in town but they all closed one by one. Going to Petsmart is an act of desperation for me.

personally, I don't think the big box stores were the killer here.
For a small "general" petstore like this, super premium dog and cat foods often "pay the rent" - sometimes literally.
Foods like Wysong, Evengers, and Oma's frozen that are not sold in the box stores can be a huge driver of traffic and sales.
Unfortunately, a larger more "boutique" store opened up in the upscale plaza next door - carrying a bigger variety of the high end products in a more "genteel" location without the fish and reptiles (some 'foofy' dog/cat customers will pay more to not see snakes etc when they buy their food, or to avoid the humidity and perfume of a LFS, sadly. I used to see reactions like that at Skiptons on a regular basis.)

Plus I suspect that the new store, being part of a small local "chain" of stores, is buying at a better volume price point than a single store can do - making it hard to compete on a even keel for the same customers.

All guesses on my part -- but the store always seemed busier before the new plaza and "upscale" competition went in.
