Back in Boston...LFS situation?

Hey guys, after four years away I am returning to Boston and hoping to get back into the hobby. Back in the day I loved to visit Skipton's, who carried a nice variety of plants, nano-fish, shrimp, and other planted tank merch... but I understand that they aren't in the aquarium game anymore. I also used to check out Lovely Pets in Quincy, which wasn't quite as nice but worth checking in on.

I bought almost all my plants here on TPT, but are there any new shops to be aware of that cater to the greater Boston area? Preferably within T range? Thanks!

Tropic Isle probably has the largest selection of fish and plants, but not a whole lot of variety shrimp-wise, though they may have expanded since I was last there. They are also not T accessible.

Big Fish Little Fish is near Porter square, and much more accessible via public transportation. They have a fairly small quantities and varieties and are a bit pricier. However, I've been impressed with the size of the filter shrimp I've gotten there--much larger than the one's I ordered online. Their dwarf shrimp also have nice color, but they don't usually carry large quantities of them.

The only other LFS I've been to is The Fish Nook in Acton, which is difficult to get to on public transportation, and is not as good as Tropic Isle.

If you can get there, Uncle Ned's Fish Factory in Millis is the best LFS in MA imo. Unreal selection of cichlids and rare FW fish. Just don't expect zebra danios or neon tetras. Also have some of the nicest employees ever.

Always have some nice cardinal tetras though agreed, they have some great fish in there.

Check out Aqua world in Chinatown! It's a very small shop, but they have driftwood, rocks, and a few varieties of dwarf shrimp. They've also got VERY pretty betta fish (and well taken care of), as well as more exotic, larger varieties of fish. Its packed full, but the shop owners have always been very nice. =)

Awesome, thanks guys. Sounds like I'll have several places to check out. I may have to get a zipcar and visit Tropic Isle and Uncle Ned's one day.

Minimal availability some of the time and I think a little pricey for shrimp. But can't be beat for fish selection. I've bought almost all of my fish there over the last several years and I have 8 tanks, although 4 are only 5g's. Not a pretty place but really great stock and they will special order too. Often has a nice selection of plants as well.

Yeah, Ned's tha Man! Just a cool guy. Place is amazing. He de-worms everything and gets them feeding before you buy them for the most part. Any questions are answered by knowledgeable staff. It's fun to just pick his brain. That place in Acton is really nice too just not nearly as big. More apistos than Ned but pricier. There used to be a half-decent pet store on Harvard ave in Allston. It's been years but I'm sure the hipsters have kept them in business. I also happened apon a decent fish store in the independence mall on the south shore: brichardi cichlids, some cool puffers and synos - and the price was right. I'd drive down again

What is the name of the new shop in quincy? I was just wondering about local fish shops today and happen to see someone post here recently. So glad they moved and didn't just shut down!

I really don't remember but it's hard to miss. It's across from the fishmonger and next to a Chinese restaurant right on billings road about a block or two from Hancock

So the name is just "Quincy Aquarium". It's 60a Billings rd. Quincy, MA. He just received a MASSIVE shipment of goldfish from China. Varieties I've never even seen before. All incredibly high quality. I'm talking thousands of fish here many of which will be sold wholesale but there's still 20+ display tanks ready for walk-ins. I was impressed, got me thinking about our greenhouse aquaculture project at the Endicott house in dedham...
