melafix question

I have an oto who is flashing and has some white marks (see here
so I got some melafix since It is supposed to sooth skin and Idk what the fish actually has
anyways I am curious about the directions
"Directions: Shake well. Remove activated carbon if possible. Add 5ml per 10 U.S. gallons of aquarium water.

Disease or wound treatment:
Dose daily for 7 days. After 7 days, make a 25% water change. Continue treatment, if necessary."

when it says dose daily for 7 days does it mean dose for the entire volume of the tank every day? I have a 40 gal so..... 20 ml a day?

I'm asking because I had a bottle of ich guard that said the same thing , repeat the dose everyday for a week
I found out later you didn't need to do that, only needed to dose once then after water changes
I believe I over medicated and killed a few fish that time, I hope to avoid that this time around
