LFS In Chicagoland, v2

The list here https://www.plantedtank.net/forums/47...b-13-12-a.html have been updated some long time ago, so i thought to make an updated version of that. A plain list, with no personal reviews, to make things fair and consistent. However, feel free to comment your experience, preferable store etc. PM me for updates, and I will try to keep the list up to date.

I created and maintain a google map for LFS in Chicagoland area. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Yb...wc&usp=sharing

I also keep the a map for CO2 refill/exchange stations https://drive.google.com/open?id=1uW...2c&usp=sharing

Leave a message or PM for additions/corrections.

My experience: went to many of them; and probably all of them from the west subs.

Old Town Aquarium:
first thing to notice - pricey. Have some plants, but limited; both salt and fresh water fish with decent selection. Various gravel, stones. Clean. Many nano tanks setup. Sale personnel nice, and knowledgeable.

Ocean Design Aquarium:
small store, both fresh and salt water fish. Price on fish ok, variety. Fish looked healthy. Plants - not that much into that. Equipment, as expected, limited and on pricey side. The owner, i guess, an easy going guy, nice talking to.

Tropi-Quatics Pet Center:
a significantly big store, with large selection of fish, both salt and fresh water. Tons of equipment, including used ones, some of it at good price. Good selection of stones, gravel, substrate, including Eco-Complete. It also has a section for pets, that gives a not so pleasant smell. Plants on very limited side, to say at best. The personnel - depends. The young guy, probably the son of the owner, was very nice to talk to, honest and helpful. The other couple of guys were less useful, with little knowledge about fish, and even less about plants. The owner, i guess, Jim - a character - kind of arrogant and inflexible, talked to me like i owned him something.

Aquarium Adventure, Bolingbrook:
ok, sort of chain store. Good selection of fish, both kinds. Had some plants, some in good shape, others less good looking. Equipment, as with many chains, in good selection. The only drawback - the personnel works on commission, as i understood, and tries to sell things hard, and at some point become annoying. The good part, some of them know what they are talking about, the funny part some of them had no clue

Oak Park Natural Pet & Fish
stopped by briefly. Ok prices, good selection of fish, and equipment. no plants, essentially.

Dave's Pets N' Stuff:
never, just please never go there, unless you want to see a disaster, and report them to the authorities. It was really bad to see in what conditions they keep the fish.

Fish Planet:
so far, among all the stores I went to, the best in terms of plants, and i could say by far. Had a very nice time there. Good selection of fish, both salt and fresh, tons of plants, from basic to some less common, several set up planted tanks with plants in excellent shape. Gravel, stones, soil, etc with good selection. The owner - very nice guy, and you can feel he likes what he does, both keeping tanks, and having a business that assumes dealing with people.

disclaimer: these are my personal impressions, positive or negative. I am not affiliated with any of these stores - so far

My personal experience with some of these stores:

New Fish: Young store with young owners, super friendly. I lived close to it and was a great place to get some freshwater fish and supplies. Their store is 50/50 between freshwater and saltwater. On the smaller side, but great guys to work with.

Golden Aquarium: Good source for all kinds of supplies, I remember buying my Finnex light there. Good selection of freshwater fish and planted tank supplies.

Aquarium Adventures in Hoffman Estates: Huge store, great selection of freshwater fish. Also have saltwater, but much bigger freshwater selection. Good selection of freshwater plants as well. Prices are pretty good, especially if you sign up for their annual membership and get a lot of fish or supplies within a year. Much more corporate than other fish stores, but I'll let you make up your own opinion about that.

Living Seas: I grew up in Park Ridge, so it's really sad to see this store go.

Thanks for doing this thread -- I did the old one a long time ago

New Fish is sadly closed now, he's just doing client tanks now but he's still selling his SPS on Craigslist.

Fish Planet is pretty much the only game in town for plants now, though we did score some emerssed Buce at Old Town a couple weeks ago.

You're missing Sho Tank Aquariums in Mundelein.

You're missing it for the list, not for actually visiting it. The place is awful, awfully kept, awful staff who don't bother to greet you when you walk in.

FWIW we have been getting our Co2, and all of our reef hobby friends get their Co2 from NFC gas.

Really cool family owned business that has been there for ever.
