Fish Planet in Deerfield is great! Good prices and healthy fish. Pretty good on dry goods too!

I second that. I've never received anything less than outstanding, friendly and knowledgeable service. It's usually a one man shop, so you might have to be patient. He also keeps somewhat limited hours. Plant selection is second to none in the Chicagoland area. Great selection of healthy fish and inverts. It's worth the trip to Deerfield.

I'm much closer to Old Orchard Aquarium, which has a pretty good selection, but can be pricey. 'Specialty' shrimp are $10-20/each. CPDs are $11 each. (Sakuras at FishPlanet are 3 for $10-12, same price for CPDs.) Plant selection is pretty good. Hit or miss on HC and various mosses. They have a very knowledgeable staff, which (usually) makes up for the higher prices.

Welcome to Chicago!

Fish planet has a nice saltwater selection, but they emphasize aquatic plants and aquascaping. They have a huge selection of plants that you normally only can get from hobbyists.
Tropi-Quatics in Lombard is a good store for fish only, all of the fish I bought from there died only from an injury or disease FAR after I purchased them. Their plant selection is OK, but it is usually picked clean the day after the shipment comes in. The owner can order rare fish for people if you call.

There's also Aquarium Adventure in Hoffman Estates or Bolingbrook.
